Private pool villa Koh Phangan guide: what to look for, and where

A practical checklist for booking a private pool villa on Koh Phangan, the island's areas compared, and how our villas in Wok Tum measure up.

Private pool and covered terrace at a Mira villa in Wok Tum, Koh Phangan

The short answer: the best private pool villa Koh Phangan offers is one with a pool you will actually use, A/C in every room, a proper kitchen, real privacy and a short, easy drive to the pier and to good beaches and restaurants. For most travellers, that points to the quiet west coast around Wok Tum, Hin Kong and Srithanu: eight to twenty minutes from Thong Sala pier, facing the sunset, and close to the island's best food and yoga.

We build and run villas on the west coast, so we have strong views. Here is the checklist we would use ourselves, the areas compared fairly, and how our own villas at Mira measure up.

Private pool villa Koh Phangan: why choose one

Koh Phangan's beaches are lovely, but many of the bays on the west and south coasts are shallow and reef-fringed, so at low tide the sea can retreat a long way. A pool of your own means a swim whenever you like, whatever the tide, and a cool place to end every day.

A villa also changes the rhythm of a holiday. You get space to spread out, separate bedrooms, a kitchen for slow breakfasts, and evenings on your own terrace rather than in a hotel corridor. For couples it is privacy; for families and friends it is room; for long stays it is a home. Koh Phangan suits this kind of stay especially well, because the island is small enough that everything good is a short drive away.

What to look for: our private pool villa checklist

1. The pool

Photos flatter pools. Ask for the dimensions and depth, especially if you want to swim lengths or are travelling with young children. Check how much sun it gets (west-facing pools catch the sunset but also the afternoon heat), whether there are loungers and shade, and how often it is cleaned. A truly private pool should not be overlooked by neighbours or shared with other villas.

2. Location, measured in minutes

On Koh Phangan, distance is about road time, not kilometres. Ask how long it takes by car to:

  • Thong Sala pier, where almost every ferry arrives. Under 15 minutes makes arrival and departure days easy.
  • A swimming beach. On the west coast, that means Haad Yao or Haad Son for most of the day, rather than the tidal bays.
  • Restaurants and a supermarket. Being near a cluster of good places matters more than being on the beach.

Also ask about the access road. Some villas sit at the top of steep dirt tracks that are hard work on a scooter and slippery after rain.

3. Air-conditioning throughout

Check that every bedroom has A/C, and ideally the living area too. Ceiling fans help, but for good sleep in April or a humid November afternoon, A/C is what you will want.

4. A real kitchen

Look for a full kitchen, not a kettle and a microwave: a hob, a fridge with space, decent pans and a table for everyone. Thong Sala's markets make cooking in a pleasure, and even if you eat out most nights, breakfast at home is one of the best parts of a villa stay.

5. Privacy

Ask whether any spaces are shared (pool, garden, parking, paths), how close the neighbours are, and whether the terrace and pool are screened. "Private pool" sometimes means a pool shared by a few villas, so ask directly.

6. The practical details

  • Minimum stay, check-in time and cancellation terms.
  • Wi-Fi if you plan to work; ask for a speed test screenshot.
  • Transfers from the pier or from Koh Samui airport.
  • Cleaning and linen changes on longer stays.
  • Who you contact if something needs fixing, and how fast they respond.
  • Booking direct. Many owners also list on Airbnb, Booking.com and Agoda; ask whether there is any difference in price or flexibility.

The areas compared

Every part of Koh Phangan suits someone. For a pool villa stay, here is how we see them.

Area Coast Character To Thong Sala pier Good for a villa stay if...
Wok Tum, Hin Kong, Srithanu West Sunsets, restaurants, yoga, cafés, quiet nights 8 to 20 min You want convenience, food and calm in one place
Haad Yao and Haad Son West Best west-coast swimming, sunset beaches Around 15 to 20 min Beach days come first
Thong Sala and Baan Tai South Town, markets, budget, Half Moon parties In town or a few minutes You want shops and short transfers above all
Chaloklum and Mae Haad North Fishing village, snorkelling at Koh Ma Around 20 to 25 min You like a village around you and snorkelling
Thong Nai Pan North-east Two beautiful bays, resort feel 30 to 45 min, steep road You plan to stay put
Haad Rin South-east Full Moon Party, nightlife About 15 to 30 min The parties are the point

Why the west coast wins for most pool villa stays

The west coast gives you the best balance on the island. It is close to the pier, the markets and the private hospitals in Thong Sala, and the island's government hospital sits between Wok Tum and Srithanu. Evenings face the sunset rather than a sound system. Within a few minutes you have a long strip of restaurants on Hin Kong road, Srithanu's yoga and café scene, padel courts and gyms, and the west coast's swimming beaches are 12 to 20 minutes away.

The honest trade-off is that the bays in front of Wok Tum, Hin Kong and Srithanu are shallow at low tide. That is exactly why a private pool makes so much sense here: you swim at home, walk the tidal flats at sunset and drive to Haad Yao when you want the sea. Our guide to where to stay on Koh Phangan's quiet side covers every area in more depth, and the Koh Phangan west coast guide goes bay by bay.

Mira, as an example: how our villas measure up

We designed Mira around the checklist above, so here it is, point by point, with nothing added.

  • The pool. Every villa has its own private pool with a covered terrace and sun deck, set in a tropical garden. There are no shared spaces. For dimensions, message us and we will send them.
  • Location. Wok Tum, on the west (sunset) coast. Thong Sala pier is 8 minutes by car, Hin Kong beach 4 minutes, Srithanu about 5, and Haad Yao around 16. Rosy Pizza, the Oyster Bar and Nena are a three- to seven-minute walk.
  • A/C throughout, with floor-to-ceiling glass and a double-height A-frame teak ceiling.
  • The kitchen. An open kitchen with an island, next to a sunken lounge and a dining table for six.
  • Space. Two bedrooms in each villa, which suits couples who like room, families and friends travelling together.
  • Craft. Teak, rattan and travertine, with furniture made to measure by local craftsmen. The villas were built in 2026.
  • The practical details. Check-in from 15:00, a minimum stay of three nights, and boat and airport transfers from Koh Samui on request. The first villas are open now, with more opening over the coming months.

What Mira is not: a beachfront property. We chose a quiet spot a few minutes inland from Hin Kong instead, close to the west coast's best restaurants and an easy drive from the pier.

When to book

The best villas go first in the peak months. Book several months ahead for the Christmas fortnight and New Year, February, March and August, and plan around Full Moon week if your dates are flexible, because ferries and accommodation fill across the island for a few days around each party. In the shoulder and rainy months you will have more choice. Our guide to the best time to visit Koh Phangan goes month by month, and how to get to Koh Phangan covers flights and ferries.

Making the most of a villa stay

  • Swim at home in the morning, then head to Haad Yao or Haad Son for the sea at high tide.
  • Book one or two dinners out on the west coast; our where to eat guide and the Friends of Mira page list our favourites.
  • Watch the sunset from your terrace one night and from a hilltop bar the next; see our best sunset spots.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Koh Phangan is best for a private pool villa?

For most travellers, the west coast around Wok Tum, Hin Kong and Srithanu. It is close to Thong Sala pier, faces the sunset, has the island's best concentration of restaurants, cafés and yoga, and a private pool solves its one weakness: shallow, tidal bays at low tide.

How much does a private pool villa on Koh Phangan cost?

Prices vary widely with size, location, season and how far ahead you book, and rise around Christmas, New Year and Full Moon weeks. Compare total prices for your dates, including cleaning fees and transfers, and ask whether booking direct is better value.

Do I need a scooter if I stay in a villa on Koh Phangan?

Not necessarily. Grab and Bolt did not operate on the island as of October 2026, but shared songthaews and private drivers are available, and many villas arrange transfers. A villa near Thong Sala or the west-coast restaurant strips makes life without a scooter much easier.

Are private pool villas on Koh Phangan good for families?

Yes. A private pool gives children a safe place to swim whenever they want, a kitchen makes mealtimes easier, and separate bedrooms help everyone sleep. Ask about pool depth and fencing, and choose an area near the hospital and shops, such as the west coast near Thong Sala.

How far in advance should I book a pool villa on Koh Phangan?

For the Christmas fortnight, New Year, February, March and August, book several months ahead. In the shoulder and rainy months, a few weeks' notice is often enough.

Can I get from Koh Samui airport to a villa on Koh Phangan easily?

Yes. Fly into Koh Samui (USM), take a taxi to the pier and a ferry of around 30 to 45 minutes to Thong Sala. Mira is 8 minutes from Thong Sala, and we can arrange boat and airport transfers on request.
