Thong Sala night market and the best markets on Koh Phangan

Phantip, the Saturday Walking Street and Mama Market in Srithanu: when to go, what to order and how much to bring.

Food stalls with roast duck, grilled snacks and fried treats at the evening food market in Thong Sala, Koh Phangan

The short answer: the Thong Sala night market, known locally as Phantip (or Pantip) market, runs every day in the centre of Thong Sala, a few minutes' walk from the pier. It comes alive from about 16:00 to 17:00, is busiest from 19:00 to 21:00, and most stalls close around 22:00. On Saturdays, the Walking Street adds a second market of food, crafts and music from about 16:00 to 22:00. On the west coast, Mama Market in Srithanu is open every evening.

Markets are one of our favourite things about Koh Phangan. They are where locals, long-stayers and visitors all eat side by side, where a full dinner costs less than a cocktail, and where you can taste southern Thai cooking at its most honest. Here is how to make the most of them.

Thong Sala night market (Phantip): the essentials

The Phantip market sits in the heart of Thong Sala, just off the main road and about a 5 to 10 minute walk from Thong Sala Pier. It has two parts: permanent shops in the buildings around the edge and open-air stalls in the central yard, with shared tables in between.

Opening times. The market is open daily. A few stalls trade from midday, but most fire up their grills from around 16:00 to 17:00 and stay open until about 22:00. The busiest stretch is 19:00 to 21:00.

When we go. Before 18:30. The charcoal is fresh, every stall is open, and you can choose without squeezing through crowds. It also means you can catch the sunset on the west coast first and still eat early, or eat first and be home for a swim.

Cash only. Nearly every stall is cash only. ATMs in Thong Sala charge foreign cards a hefty fee, so withdraw a larger amount once rather than several small ones.

What to eat at Thong Sala night market

Prices below are typical ranges reported in 2026.

Dish What it is Typical price
Moo ping and grilled chicken Pork skewers and chicken, with sticky rice 10 to 50 baht
Southern curry over rice Pick two or three curries from the trays 60 to 70 baht
Pad thai Stir-fried rice noodles, cooked to order 60 to 100 baht
Som tam Green papaya salad, pounded to order; ask for it mild Within the 50 to 100 baht range
Seafood Grilled squid, prawns and fish by weight Varies by size
Roti Thin fried pancake with banana, egg or condensed milk Desserts from about 5 to 60 baht
Mango sticky rice Sweet sticky rice, ripe mango, coconut cream Up to about 60 baht
Fruit shakes and coconuts Fresh, cold and everywhere Varies by stall

Western food, from burgers to pizza, is also on offer at around 150 to 250 baht, but we would stick to the Thai stalls; they are the reason to come.

How we do it. Walk one full lap before buying anything. Then share: a couple of skewers, a curry over rice, a som tam and a shake between two, and finish with mango sticky rice. You will spend a few hundred baht and try half a dozen dishes.

Spice tip. Southern Thai food can be very hot. Say mai phet for not spicy, or phet nit noi for a little spicy.

The Saturday Walking Street

Every Saturday, a street in Thong Sala closes to traffic and becomes the Walking Street market. It runs on the road with the post office, a short walk from the pier, from about 16:00 to 22:00, and entry is free.

The Walking Street is a different mood from Phantip. There is food, of course, but also clothes, handmade jewellery, art, souvenirs, live music and, on some nights, fire performers. It is busier and more social, and a good place to pick up gifts.

Our tips:

  • Arrive by 17:00. The most popular food stalls sell out of their best dishes long before closing.
  • Combine it. Do a lap of the Walking Street for shopping, then head to Phantip for dinner, or the other way round.
  • Bring small notes. Change can run short at the busiest stalls.
  • Expect traffic. Saturday evening is the busiest time in Thong Sala; leave a little extra time if you are catching a boat.

Mama Market, Srithanu: the west coast's evening market

Closer to home, Mama Market in Srithanu is the market we use most. It is a covered food market in Srithanu village, open daily from around 16:00 until late, with roughly 30 stalls. Most are open from about 17:00 to 22:00, and the busiest time is 18:00 to 20:00.

It reflects Srithanu itself: relaxed, international and very good at vegetarian and vegan food. You will find Thai curries and noodles alongside pizza, pancakes, grilled fish (the grilled salmon gets a lot of mentions), smoothies and plant-based versions of Thai classics. Seating is under cover with fans, there is live music on some nights, and it is an easy place for families.

If you are staying on the west coast, Mama Market means you do not need to drive to Thong Sala for a market dinner. Our Wok Tum and Srithanu area guide covers the rest of the village, from yoga to coffee.

Other markets worth knowing

  • Thong Sala fresh market. A daily morning market for fruit, vegetables, spices, curry pastes and fresh coconut milk. If your villa has a kitchen, this is where to shop. Go early, when the produce is freshest.
  • Phangan Food Court, Thong Sala. A covered daily food court with Thai food plus pizza, salads and healthy options, useful when it rains.
  • Chaloklum Sunday market. Local guides list an evening market in Chaloklum on Sundays, roughly 17:00 to 21:00, with food, drinks and clothing. It is a nice excuse to visit the fishing village; check the day locally before you go.
  • Temple fairs. Throughout the year, temples hold festivals lasting several days, with food stalls, games and stages. If you see one, stop.

Market evenings with children or special diets

Markets are relaxed places to eat with children. Grilled chicken with sticky rice, fried rice, noodles, fresh fruit and roti are easy wins for younger palates, and the noise and colour keep everyone entertained. Go early, before the 19:00 crowd, so you can find a table together.

For vegetarians, look for stalls with vegetable curries, tofu dishes, noodle soups and fruit, and remember that fish sauce and shrimp paste appear in many Thai dishes; ask for jay (Thai vegan) if you want to avoid them. Mama Market in Srithanu is the easiest of all for plant-based eating. If you have a serious allergy, take a translated note, since stall holders cook fast and kitchens are shared.

Tips for market evenings on Koh Phangan

  • Cash, always. Small notes make life easy.
  • Bring a reusable bag and bottle. It saves a pile of plastic over a week.
  • Look for the queues. A line of locals is the best review there is.
  • Dress lightly but respectfully. Swimwear belongs on the beach, not in town.
  • Mind the scooters. Thong Sala's streets get busy after dark.
  • Book transport home. If you have been drinking, take a taxi rather than riding; our getting around Koh Phangan guide explains your options.

Markets, restaurants and a home base

Markets are only half of Koh Phangan's food scene. For sit-down dinners, from Neapolitan pizza to Persian, see our guide to where to eat on the west coast and our hand-picked Friends of Mira, which start a few minutes' walk from the villas.

Wok Tum is perfectly placed for market evenings: Thong Sala and Phantip are about eight minutes away, and Srithanu's Mama Market is even closer. Mira's six private pool villas each have an island kitchen, so you can bring fruit back from the morning market, or simply come home full and happy for a late swim. You can check dates and book directly.
